Beach truck kills US tourist

An American tourist was killed on a beach in Dingle when she was struck by a lorry carrying surfboards. The woman, in her fifties, was with her husband on Inch strand just before 10am yesterday when she was hit by the reversing lorry. Gardai technical examiners attended the scene. Meanwhile, a 46-year-old male motorcyclist was killed at Stonepark, Co Sligo, in a collision with a van.

New Luas line to carry 2m

A 4.2km Luas line extension to Citywest was opened by Leo Varadkar, the transport minister. It is expected to carry 2m passengers a year. Varadkar said a decision on linking the city’s two Luas lines will be made in September.

Public face four polls in autumn

Brendan Howlin, the minister for public expenditure and reform, said the government planned to hold three referendums on the same day as the presidential election in October. The polls would be on judicial pay, the power of the Oireachtas to conduct investigations, and the privilege of communications between citizens and their public representatives.

Belfast riots

The police do not believe paramilitaries were behind the trouble in east Belfast on Friday night. Six officers were injured as missiles were thrown and seven arrests were made.

Leader dies

Sir Oliver Napier, the first leader of the Alliance party, has died at the age of 75. One of the party founders, he was leader from 1973 to 1984. He was born in 1935 in Belfast.
