Drink and drugs at open jail

An increasing number of prisoners are being found under the influence of drugs or alcohol at an open jail, an inspection report says today. Finds at Hollesley Bay prison in Suffolk included spirits, beer and cannabis. The inspection found that targeted searching and drug testing at the jail, described as having an easygoing atmosphere, did not always take place.

Michael Wood, the governor of the jail, dismissed suggestions that he was in charge of a “holiday camp”. Press reports calling the jail “Holliday Bay” were unfair and demoralising, he said. “There is a lot of positive hard work going on here.”

Fox under fire

Fox News, the television channel famous for its opinionated stance, has been criticised by Ofcom, the communications regulator for saying, the day of publication of the Hutton report, that the BBC “felt entitled to lie” and had “a frothing-at-the-mouth anti-Americanism”. It had “breached” Ofcom’s code.

Cyclist’s fatal fall

A cyclist was killed when he fell 100ft off a cliff as he tried out a bike in front of his family. Mike Ford, 27, tumbled over the edge when he lost control of his new mountain bike. His horrified family watched his plunge from the cliffs at Southerndown, near Bridgend, South Wales.

Mental health aid

The Government has begun a five-year plan to help people with mental health problems, supported by £2.7 million funding. Twenty Whitehall departments, agencies and other organisations will attempt to ensure that people with mental health problems — one in six adults — have equal opportunities.

A letter from Lord Nelson offering to resign his command, written ten years before Trafalgar, is to be auctioned by Bonhams on June 29. In it an indignant Nelson refers to a letter in which the Foreign Secretary insinuated “Infamous and Scandalous behaviour of the Conduct of Myself”.

A tennis player is to juggle her debut at the Wimbledon tennis championships with her A-level exams. Katie O’Brien, 18, from Hessle, near Hull, is hoping organisers at the tournament, which starts on Monday, will give her a late start, so she can sit French and maths exams in the morning.

A generation of obese children are vulnerable to potentially life-threatening illnesses as fat poisons their livers, US scientists say. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease could progress and require a liver transplant, Ariel Feldstein of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, New York, writes in Hepatology.
