A LEBANESE student has been arrested in Germany in connection with failed bomb attacks on two trains last month. The man, aged 21, was detained in the city of Kiel. On Friday police had released closed-circuit television footage of two suspects at Cologne railway station. The bombs, planted in suitcases, were discovered aboard two trains on July 31.

A MAN aged 62 collapsed and died after chasing youths he caught breaking into a neighbour’s car in Anfield, Liverpool, late on Friday night. James Barrett was babysitting his grandchildren when the trouble occurred.

A CYPRIOT court has remanded four British tourists in custody charged with the murder of a youth. The four are accused of intentionally crashing their car into a motorbike, killing a teenager.
Police hunt for stolen Greek icon
ONE of Greece’s most potent national symbols, a 700-year-old icon of the Virgin Mary, has been stolen from a cliffside monastery. The burglars scaled a cliff to break into the Elona monastery in Leonidio, about 185 miles southwest of Athens. After smashing a window they cut the icon, which is credited with miraculous powers, from its frame and then abseiled to the ground.

Rabbit flu death
A FARMER has died of rabbit flu four days after being infected by a creature he shot on his land, near Ipswich. John Freeman, 29, is believed to have picked up the bacteria pasteurella multocida.

FOUR American soldiers were killed yesterday in two clashes with insurgents in Afghanistan. Three died in the eastern province of Kunar and one, with an Afghan colleague, in a separate incident in Uruzgan.

HUNDREDS of women could be freed from jail to ease overcrowding in prisons. John Reid, the home secretary, believes many of the women should not be serving custodial sentences. He wants to introduce “community” alternatives to prison, including small residential units where they would receive group therapy. Only the most persistent and dangerous offenders would serve their sentences in jail.
