Widow defies funeral plea

The widow of PC David Rathband, who was shot and blinded by gunman Raoul Moat, has attended his funeral despite being asked to stay away by her brother-in-law.

Kath Rathband, right, who was estranged from her husband when he was found hanged last month, joined hundreds of mourners in Stafford. The service began with the song Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, which was said to reflect Rathband’s “irrepressible humour”.


Horse kicks boy

A toddler suffered a serious head injury when he was kicked by a horse yesterday morning. The boy, aged two, suffered lacerations and was in stable condition in hospital after the accident in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.


Clarke protest

Three Fathers for Justice campaigners took to the roof of justice secretary Ken Clarke’s London home yesterday in protest at plans to hold civil court hearings in private. Two women and a man dressed themselves as superheroes before scaling the property.


Murder arrests

Four men have been arrested after a man aged 38 was stabbed to death in Newbury, Berkshire. Three men, aged 20, 22 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of murder. The fourth, aged 32, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Ice-cool captain

A Royal Navy captain has been praised after steering his ship through 12ft thick ice in Antarctica at night. Peter Sparkes, the skipper of HMS Protector, said: “It was like navigating Hampton Court maze in the dark with a miner’s lamp on.”
