A tribute to the 14 British servicemen killed in last weekend’s Nimrod crash in Afghanistan was held at a Scottish air show yesterday. A Nimrod from RAF Kinloss in Moray, where 12 of the dead men were based, flew over the show at RAF Leuchars in Fife as 50,000 spectators watched in silence.

A boy aged 15 has been released on bail after a package containing suspected home-made explosives was taken to a Hampshire school. A bomb disposal team said the package contained food colouring.

Hoax diver ‘ill’

A diver from Guernsey who claimed to have been missing at sea for 56 hours when in fact he had taken a ferry to England had suffered a mental breakdown, according to his family. Matthew Harvey, 35, left, went missing last Saturday and when picked up by a yacht on Monday said he had been knocked unconscious and stranded for two days.

Case of the solar-powered gnome

A man has been threatened with prosecution because he refuses to remove from his garden a solar-powered gnome dressed as a policeman. Police say the ornament is part of a dispute that Gordon MacKillop, 46, is having with a neighbour in Liskeard, Cornwall, and that its presence amounts to harassment.

Two held after death of child

Two people were being questioned yesterday over the suspicious death of a three-year-old boy. The child was found seriously ill at a house in Bishopstoke, Hampshire, on Thursday night and died in hospital.

Thousands hit by toxic waste

The number of people taken ill in Abidjan, the capital of Ivory Coast, after inhaling fumes from dumped toxic waste has risen to more than 5,000. Three have died.
