Prosecutor quits
The head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for the northwest has announced his resignation.

Nazir Afzal, who has criticised the failure of the CPS to tackle child sexual exploitation, was recently cleared of claims he sent a text message to the defendant in a court case.

Afzal, appointed in 2011, said he had always intended to step down this year.


Rapist hunted
Police are hunting a rapist who attacked a woman waiting at a bus stop in Leeds and “left her for dead”.

The 18-year-old victim was dragged into a garden and raped on Friday evening, suffering head injuries and a suspected broken hip.
