THE age limit for free IVF treatment is to be raised in Scotland to allow more couples to have children in later life. Malcolm Chisholm, the health minister, plans to allow women who have been trying for a baby for two years to get infertility treatment on the National Health Service up to the age of 39. It is unavailable to women aged over 37 at present. More than 1,000 infertile couples are believed to have benefited since free treatment began.

US businessman buys Lanark castle

AN American businessman is to become the owner of Castle Lee in Lanarkshire, along with its baronial title. The entrepreneur, whose identity has not been revealed, is expected to take over the ownership of the castle and its 261 acres next month. Although it was for sale for £7m in the first internet auction for a castle, the purchase price is expected to be significantly lower.

A SCOT who was allegedly attacked in Cyprus by a fellow holidaymaker was yesterday moved to another hospital after his condition deteriorated. Douglas Neilson, 19, is from Wishaw, Lanarkshire.
