Stroke drug offers hope

A new drug treatment that helps to protect against strokes could benefit more than a million people. Dabigatran etexilate, marketed as Pradaxa, was found in clinical trials to reduce the risk significantly in all patients with atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder.

About 150,000 Britons suffer a stroke each year, 15 per cent of which are a direct result of atrial fibrillation. The trial findings, which indicated that Pradaxa reduced stroke risk by between 30 per cent and 39 per cent in patients with three different types of atrial fibrillation will be presented today at the American College of Cardiology in New Orleans. European regulators are expected to make a final decision on using Pradaxa in Britain in the next few months.
