Two held over man shot dead in bed

Barnsley A man was shot dead in his bed as his partner and son, aged 3, lay beside him.

Gunmen broke into the home of Lee Gray, 32, in Worsbrough, Barnsley, in the early hours of Saturday and shot him in the head. A neighbour said: “My partner saw the woman come out covered in blood and she had the little boy with her.”

Two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting. Police have also searched a house in nearby Athersley.

Boy shot in knees on own doorstep

High Wycombe A boy of 14 was in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being shot in both knees on the doorstep of his home in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Police believe a shotgun was used in the attack, which happened at about 8.30pm on Tuesday. The teenager was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury. Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Mears, of Thames Valley Police, said no motive had been established.

Service payouts rise

Armed Forces personnel injured in service are to receive significant increases in compensation, as recommended by Lord Boyce, the former Chief of the Defence Staff. Lump sums rise by an average 25 per cent, except the top award which was recently doubled to £570,000. The compensation for mental illnes triples to £140,000.

A retrospective reassessment of 10,000 awards is expected to result in improved payments to all those helped by the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme since it was set up in 2005.

‘Canoe’ wife released

Anne Darwin, the wife of John Darwin, the canoeist who pretended to be dead, has been released from jail near York, having served less than half of her six-and-a-half-year sentence for fraud and money laundering. Her husband, who was released in January, admitted faking his own death in 2002 to allow his wife to make fraudulent insurance and pension claims.
