Warning on statins

There is not enough evidence to justify giving cholesterol-lowering statins to people with no history of heart disease, a study of 34,000 patients has found. Its authors, from the Cochrane Heart Group, stressed the need for caution in balancing the risks and benefits of statins.

‘Dewani motive found’

South African detectives have discovered Shrien Dewani’s motive for the murder of his wife, Anni, while on honeymoon, a police chief has claimed. Bheki Cele said evidence could be revealed at his extradition hearing tomorrow in London.

Man charged with rape

A man has been charged with assaulting three women in West London at knifepoint this month. Christopher Shepherd, 31, appeared at West London Magistrates’ Court charged with three counts of rape, three of robbery, two of sexual assault and possessing a bladed article. He was remanded in custody.

School banister death

A girl fell to her death while sliding down a banister at Raine’s Foundation School at Bethnal Green, in the East End of London, an inquest heard. Elle Hiscott, 11, was captured on CCTV tumbling two storeys down the stairwell on October 13 last year. She died in hospital nine days later. Verdict: accidental death.

Price confirms split

Katie Price, the glamour model also known as Jordan, has separated from Alex Reid, her second husband, after 11 months. Ms Price said that she had married Mr Reid, a cage fighter, “too quickly”. She divorced from Peter Andre in 2009.

‘Canoe death’ man freed

John Darwin, 60, who faked his death in a canoeing accident in 2002 to allow his wife Anne to make insurance and pension claims, has been released from Moorland open prison, Doncaster. Darwin was jailed for six years and three months in 2008.
