Thousands of supermarket Christmas trees are being recalled because of a potentially lethal electrical fault with their lights. Asda said it was asking customers to return more than 10,000 of the prelit trees, priced between £15 and £27. It has also withdrawn another 50,000 from shelves and warehouses.
Man held over haircut attacks
A man was arrested yesterday in connection with attacks in Bournemouth, Dorset, in which parts of women’s hair was cut off while they were travelling on buses. More than 10 women had complained to police.
Teenager dies impaled on railing

A teenager was killed early yesterday when he became impaled on spiked railings at a churchyard in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Stephen Saunders, 19, was trying to climb over the fence when he slipped.
Stone charged
The loyalist Michael Stone appeared in court in Belfast yesterday charged with trying to murder the Sinn Fein leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness. Stone, 51, left, who was arrested at Stormont on Friday, is also accused of possessing explosives, nail bombs, an axe and a garrotte. He was remanded in custody until December 22.
Leave phones behind, troops told
British troops in southern Afghanistan have been instructed not to take mobile phones on operations and not to complain to the media. The orders follow screening on websites of footage of the problems facing troops.

Private school to run city academy
Wellington college, the independent school, is to run a city academy in Wiltshire for non fee-paying pupils. It will be formed by the merger of two state schools and will have a house system and take boarders.

Wards at a hospital have been closed after an outbreak of a potentially fatal superbug. About 10 patients at Lincoln county hospital were infected.
