THE search for a journalist missing on Britain’s highest mountain has resumed. Gavin Nightingale, 39, a senior sub-editor for Essex County Newspapers, in Colchester, Essex, has not been seen since he left the Glen Nevis youth hostel in the Highlands to climb Ben Nevis nine days ago. Bad weather and the risk of avalanches have been hampering the search.

Bridge corrosion

THE manager of the Forth Road Bridge has suggested spending £2m to assess the support cables after tests revealed signs of corrosion. “The worst section so far has 31 broken wires, but you must remember that the main cable consists of over 11,600 of these wires,” said Alastair Andrew.

Ferry dispute

A LABOUR MSP has criticised union plans to ballot staff over industrial action at Caledonian MacBrayne, the ferry operator. Alasdair Morrison, who represents the Western Isles, said the decision by Rail, Maritime and Transport was “regrettable” after talks failed to resolve the issues.
