Britons die in Outback air crash

A British couple were killed when their light aircraft crashed and burst into flames in a field near the landing strip of a remote wilderness park in northwestern Australia.

The pilot, 60, and his wife, 64, had retired and emigrated to Perth, where their daughter lives. They had just taken off from the El Questro resort near Kununurra when their Cessna 421 experienced engine problems and they tried to return to the runway.

The couple, who were killed instantly in the crash, have not been identified.

Race fans killed

Three Britons were killed in a car crash near Rotterdam. while on their way to watch the Belgian Grand Prix. Jonathan Chandler, 28, Dean Andrews, 34, and Shaun Williams, 28, all from Newtown, Wales. A Portuguese driver was arrested after the crash.

The Conservatives will today promise unannounced spot-checks on nurseries and playgroups by Ofsted as they step up the battle with Labour over childcare policy. The Tory plans will also promise that good childcare centres will not close down because of a lack of funds.

Ram raiders

Thieves stole a JCB digger and used it to ram a bank and rip two cash machines from the wall. Police believed that the raiders escaped with tens of thousands of pounds after smashing into a parade of shops and raiding the HSBC Bank in Chatham, Kent.

Titanic footage

Footage of survivors of the Titanic docking at New York has resurfaced after being hidden in an East Anglia shed for 70 years. The film — the first images of the aftermath of the disaster, which claimed more than 1,500 lives in 1912 — shows passengers getting off the rescue ship Carpathia.

Fire kills girl, 2

Police began an investigation into a fire that killed a two-year-old girl. Libby Ann Louise Dore was found dead in a bedroom by firefighters in a ground-floor flat after the fire in Worthing, West Sussex. Her mother, 22, brother, 4, and a 17-year-old youth were rescued.

Diving accident

A British man on holiday in Turkey died in a diving accident, according to reports. Ian Fearns was found underwater by friends after he failed to surface. A post-mortem examination had yet to be performed but decompression was said to be the likely cause of death.

Four people remained in hospital with serious injuries after falling to the ground when a grandstand collapsed at a religious festival. A total of 21 people were injured when the stand gave way during a concert by Delirious?, a religious band, at Lincolnshire Showground.

A pedestrian plan for central London drawn up by Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, will turn Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus into traffic no-go zones. There will be mini parks in Oxford Street and “greening” in all central areas to enhance pedestrian priority.
