THREE children were killed in a fire at a house in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, early yesterday. Firefighters found two of the children, a boy aged three and a girl aged 11 months, dead in a bedroom. The third, a boy aged nine, was rescued but was dead on arrival at hospital. A woman aged 23 was in a serious condition in hospital last night while a man, also aged 23, suffered minor injuries.
Abduction suspect faces extradition

DETECTIVES investigating the abduction and death of a woman in West Yorkshire are preparing to extradite a suspect from Greece. Stephanie Hammill, 20, a travel agent, was knocked down and killed in Wakefield in November 2003 after she escaped from a car in which she had been held. Detectives flew to Thessalonika and spent several days questioning a man aged 26.
System of elderly care ‘a scandal’
POLITICIANS and the public are in “denial” about the “mess” the system of elderly care is in, according to the chairwoman of a 12-month investigation by the King’s Fund think tank. The inquiry found evidence that pensioners were at risk of abuse and even death from inappropriate care administered by untrained staff. Julia Unwin, the inquiry chairwoman, said care of the elderly was a scandal.
Fatal shark attack

A GIRL aged 14 was killed by a shark as she and a friend swam in the Gulf of Mexico east of Pensacola, Florida yesterday. The pair were about 100 yards offshore when they were attacked.
Warne split
THE Australian cricket star Shane Warne has separated from his wife, Simone. Warne, 35, has been married for 10 years and the couple have three children. He is now preparing for the Ashes.
