I wish to treat my family to a break in New York over new year. There are two of us, our son aged 18 and daughter, 14. We want luxury but not faceless hotels. Any advice? — Keith Purcell, Baildon, West Yorks



For a blowout, try the Plaza Athénée (001 212 734 9100, www.plaza-athenee.com), a first-class hotel on the East Side of Manhattan. It’s known for friendly service and still has availability over new year. One night’s B&B for four people in a two-bedroom suite is about £820.

The small, stylish Paramount and The Time also have availability. The UK operator Travelscene (020-8424 9648) has five-night packages from £739pp, including flights. Essex House, opposite Central Park, is deluxe rather than designer, but with a reputation for good service. Kirker Holidays (020-7231 3333) has new year packages from £945pp, including flights.
