It has been such a fun year that many sensible people took to their beds in November and decided just to hide under the duvet until 2017. For those brave enough to peek out on New Year’s Eve, Jools Holland is having his Hootenanny (BBC2, 11.20pm), with guests Chaka Khan, Christine & the Queens, Gregory Porter and the UB40 that didn’t endorse Jeremy Corbyn; on Channel 4, Alan Carr’s New Year’s Specstacular (C4, 9pm) welcomes the recently anointed royal Danny Dyer and Strictly’s Laura Whitmore and Greg Rutherford. No one would blame you for going back under the covers until the always-rousing New Year’s Day Vienna Concert (BBC2, 11.15am) conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. On ITV, Miranda Hart presents Morecambe And Wise’s Funniest Moments (8.30pm) and talks to Des O’Connor. The highlight of the day for many will be the first in a new series of Sherlock (BBC1, 8.30pm), in an episode called The Six Thatchers and guest starring Toby Jones. Someone is wrecking images of Mrs T and our hero has to work out who. A madman? An art lover? One of those BBC lefties we keep hearing about?
