New Kids in Town: New Young Pony Club

Who are they? A London five-piece, NYPC are built around the nucleus of Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence. Augmented live, the duo have spent the two years since they formed hunting for the perfect punk-funk groove - and, as their new single, Get Lucky, demonstrates, they've found it. A glorious mash-up of the Slits, New Order, the B-52's, Medium Medium and Tom Tom Club, NYPC's sound is all prickly, trebly funk guitar, nonchalant vocals and dubby bass. The last, thrillingly high in the mix, recalls the Slits' Tessa Pollitt, while Sarah Jones's drumming is brutal. Vinyl copies of the band's earlier singles, Ice Cream/Tight Fit and The Get Go/Jerk Me, are hard to find, but the songs are available to download. NYPC's tour offers a great chance to catch an amazing band.

When's the record out? Get Lucky is released on March 6 on Noise.

Can I see them live? In Bristol, on Wednesday; visit www.myspace.com/newyoungponyclub.
