New Ireland, a life assurance company, has hired Niall O’Callaghan from pension and benefits consultant Mercer as it seeks to rebuild its management team following a spate of high-profile departures and retirements, writes Niall Brady.

His initial role will be as interim head of sales, filling the vacancy left by Denis Kelleher, who has retired after 21 years at New Ireland.

Other recent departures include Dave Swanton, the former product director, and Robert Wolfe, the head of investments.

O’Callaghan’s recruitment comes as Michael Murphy prepares to take over as managing director next month.

Murphy joins New Ireland from another pension consultancy, Willis Towers Watson. He replaces Sean Casey, who stepped down unexpectedly as head of New Ireland last year.
