A teenager who recently passed his driving test and his girlfriend are among four people killed when two cars crashed near the Brecon Beacons.

Three 17-year-olds and a woman aged 68 died in the collision, which happened as a number of vehicles travelled in convoy in Powys, Mid Wales.

The teenagers have been named locally as Corey Price, Rhodri Miller, and his girlfriend Alesha O’Connor.

Rhodri, who was driving, had only recently passed his test, according to reports, while Corey was a promising young footballer who trained with the Cardiff City Football Academy.

The accident happened on the A470 near Storey Arms, Brecon, just before 10.15pm on Friday.

Two vehicles were involved – a black Volkswagen Golf estate and a green Volkswagen Golf.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the black vehicle, which was not thought to have been part of the convoy, were taken to hospital after the crash. The passenger, Margaret Elizabeth Challis, a grandmother from the Merthyr area, later died; the driver is in a serious condition.

Seven teenagers arrested over the incident have been released on bail.

Superintendent Chris Curtis said: “This is a tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the families at this difficult time.”

Dylan Jones, headteacher at Ysgol Bro Morgannwg in Barry, told the BBC that one of those killed was a sixth form pupil at the school.

Mr Jones said both boys were talented, Corey in football and Rhodri in science.

“Very devastating. It’s been a shock to us all, and a number of their friends also are feeling the shock,” the headteacher said.

Asked how they would be remembered, he said: “They’re remembered as sociable and jolly, and a little mischievous, I’m sure, both of them, but on Monday we will come together to share those thoughts, and be able to reflect on their lives, and hopefully celebrate their lives, tomorrow morning.”

Among tributes paid was a tweet from Cardiff and Vale Schools Football Association, which said: “Hearing terrible news that we’ve lost a former @CVSFA player in Corey Price. Great player. Thoughts to all his family & friends. #toplad”

Bristol Rovers footballer Mitchell Palmer said: “Very sad to hear about Corey Price, great lad great footballer! Thoughts are with family and friends! RIP big man!”

Mr Jones added: “I have spoken to both parents and we are preparing for Monday so that we can offer all assistance and counselling to the pupils.”

A former male pupil had also died, he said, while a third pupil was in hospital and seriously injured.
