Navy in Korea

Long memories ensure gratitude

Sir, The letter (June 25) from the President of the Republic of Korea acknowledging and expressing the gratitude of his country for the contributuion of the UK’s Armed Forces in the Korean War continues a theme that has been continually expressed at all levels within Korea and frequently through their embassy in London over the past 60 years. They do not forget and make a point of reminding us of their gratitude.

Recently, every known UK survivor of that war received a personal letter of thanks from the President. I suspect there are many of our people who, while rightly acknowledging the significant role of the Army in the land war, are not aware that the entire UK air effort in support of the Commonwealth Brigade was provided by Royal Navy aircraft carriers: a lesson perhaps to those involved in the forthcoming coalition Strategic Defence review.
