Naturism is lawful on all Waveney beaches

Council accepts that ‘de-designation’ has no bearing on naturists

Sir, You report (Sept 1) Waveney District Council’s decision to “de-designate” the existing naturist beach at Corton from November, and its attempts to identify a replacement. Last week, in response to my formal complaint about the council’s handling of the matter, its deputy chief executive and monitoring officer accepted that the “de-designation” is of no legal effect (it relates only to signage) and that an (unconnected) change in bylaws means that, as of June 2009, naturism is now lawful on all Waveney beaches including at Corton.

Existing naturists (some of whom have, for example, bought static caravans in the area to make use of the existing beach) will thus, quite lawfully, continue to use the existing beach unless the council designates an alternative that they find preferable. So, too, perhaps will others who have not yet tried it.
