Many people are finding that they are not getting many birds at their bird tables and feeders yet, but this is only because there is still plenty of food in the wild for them. Insects and spiders are still not hard for them to find, and there is an abundance of seeds and fruit. Goldfinches, which flock to feeders in the winter for nyjer, or niger, seeds, can often be seen at present feeding on the ground. Most of the tall thistles whose downy seedheads they were attacking earlier in the autumn have now withered and toppled over, but the goldfinches go on picking up the fallen seeds. They also come down for the seeds in the dandelion clocks and for groundsel seeds. When they are disturbed, they go up with a call like tinkling bells and a flash of gold wingbars. Some of the goldfinches that bred here in the summer are moving off to France and Spain, but replacements are trickling in from the Continent.
