National dress

Sir, Mrs Margaret Davies (letter, August 26) asked what would be the appropriate national dress for attendants if London won the right to stage the 2012 Olympic Games.

Some years ago, at an international exhibition in Brussels, there was a march past of participants in national dress, each group preceded by a banner stating their nationality. The British wore dark suits with bowler hats and carried rolled umbrellas and a copy of the Financial Times.

The watching crowds needed no banner.

Yours faithfully,

NICHOLAS RUSSELL,

37 School Lane,

Haslingfield, Cambridge CB3 7JL.

From Ms M. A. Jackson-Roberts

Sir, If the weather in 2012 follows this year’s pattern, the national dress for podium stewardesses should be plastic macs.

Yours faithfully,
