Sir, I encountered the phrase “pet” (letter, Aug 18), together with other unique words some 20 years ago, when I first came to the North East, and I have never felt patronised, threatened or insulted by such a term of endearment.
I am often called “Princess Pet” in local shops, and feel only accepted and included as part of the community.

Sir, I have no objection whatsoever to being called “pet”, “hen”, “dear” or “lass”. But I object strongly to being addressed by my first name by complete strangers when making contact by e-mail to any organisation with whom I am doing business over the internet.

Sir, If you lived in Newcastle and your wife was called Petronella (letter, Aug 18), then being arrested would be the least of your worries.
