MORGAN ROTH, 30, editorial assistant, Career, The Times
My boss had asked me to e-mail someone with instructions on how to get extra copies of one of our publications. I had no trouble finding the internal extension for the person he needed to speak to, but I didn’t know the first few digits. I assumed the prefix was the same as on our phone number, so I added it and e-mailed him. I realised it wasn’t the right assumption ten minutes later when the client called back to say: “Interesting number, but not quite the service I was after. Do you have another number?” In a panic I dialled the number I’d sent him and was greeted by a sultry female voice saying: “Welcome to the nympho hotline . . .” Fortunately for me, the client was amused and the fact that I still have a job proves that Career’s editor has a sense of humour.
