My first crash: Penny Halsall

There were three lanes that merged into two and in the crush I clipped another driver quite badly. I still remember the horrible noise.

I drove on looking for a place to stop. By the time I found one he came screeching up and jumped out very angry. He was fuming, saying: “I know about all you rich bitches around here, driving around in cars like this. I bet some man has bought you this car.”

I stayed calm and gradually he calmed down. The funny thing was he didn’t want to say sorry but he wanted to communicate his attitude had changed, so he started being very protective. He put his hand out to smooth down my skirt in the wind. I’m 59 and he was a lot younger, so there was no suggestion it was anything untoward.

After we sorted out the insurance he rang me to check everything was all right. He turned out to be quite sweet in the end.
