My first crash: Leigh Zimmerman

I was driving my Toyota RAV4 in north London a few weeks back and I had my husband, daughter and mother in the car. I hate city driving — it can get very congested. At one point I had someone parallel parking on my left while in front there was someone who looked as if she was turning into an adjoining road but wasn’t indicating.

The guy on my left was coming dangerously close so I was distracted. Meanwhile, the car in front stopped. In the confusion I went straight into the car in front.

I was probably only going about 8mph, so the impact wasn’t even enough to make the airbags come out, but that little tap caused an unbelievable amount of damage.

My air-conditioner and radiator and the whole front of my car were bent out of shape. On the inside, too, the bump had moved things around quite significantly. The repairs set me back a few grand but the other driver got away with virtually no damage — maybe her wheelarch, but that was all. So much for 4x4s being sturdy.
