Carl sent off hundreds of CVs and letters before being invited to a curious interview.
“I replied to a very anonymous advert in a newspaper with a PO Box address. I received a phone call from a woman who would not give any details, not even a contact name; just a place, date and time. I asked what I should do if I couldn’t make it and the voice said: ‘If you can’t make it, just don’t show up.’ I was very suspicious and thought it must be industrial espionage, but I went,” he says. “It turned out to be a fantastically established company with an amazing client list — it just didn’t court publicity. The experience taught me that you don’t necessarily face an interview process you expect but you have to see past that and make the most of every opportunity.”
