My Angel (Mon Ange) is the directorial debut of the French screenwriter Serge Frydman. His poetic tendencies are at odds with the film’s grainy realism as a baby-craving hooker (the waif-like Vanessa Paradis) goes on the run with the teenage son (Vincent Rottiers) of a vague acquaintance killed by a pimp. These wounded souls find comfort in their flight across the Low Countries with their dreams and a box full of cash. But the script fails to develop the relationship, even when the clueless, hormone-raging boy starts to view his protector as more than a surrogate mother. The strong lead performances are left stranded.
