Music: Tom Petty

Not every musician’s reputation can withstand an exhaustive four-hour hagiography from art-house wunderkind turned pop documentarian Peter Bogdanovich. But those who sat through Runnin’ Down a Dream, a 238-minute account of the life and career of Tom Petty, will understand why Bogdanovich took his time. The hard-bitten Floridian seems to embody some American essence and his story, with its ups and downs, its moments of self-destruction and transcendence, has the qualities of a great novel. Starting out as a lip-curled outsider from the Gainesville backwoods, Petty flirted with mega-success on Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open. As a member of the Traveling Wilburys, he walked as an equal alongside Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and George Harrison. Taking the Heartbreakers on their first European tour in 20 years, fans can expect a set crammed with hits.
