Music Choice

Even before his 1997 hit, Let Me Entertain You, made the point crystal clear, it seemed obvious that Robbie Williams was driven by a pathological desire for attention: since his Take That days, his career has been marked by a needy self-dramatisation and an easily distracted nature. This yielded such diverse hits as Angel, Millennium and Rock DJ, as he hopped from Britpop to power ballads. But while he signed a deal with EMI rumoured to be worth £80m last year, his star status may be on the wane. America has remained indifferent to his increasingly desperate ploys to break Stateside, including an album of crooning covers and a move to Los Angeles, that have chipped away at his cheeky chappie image. Live, however, his urge to perform unashamedly crowdpleasing shows still gets the better of him.
