When they formed in the late 1970s, Bauhaus were technically a post-punk band, but they had more in common with glam rock than heavyweight contemporaries such as Magazine and Joy Division. Tellingly, one of their early singles, and one of their best, was a cover of T Rex’s Telegram Sam. Few took them seriously and by 1981 they were well on their way to being washed up. They were saved, however, by the rising tide of goth, and inspired subsequent acts such as Mission. So generally wimpish were their successors, especially industrial noise purveyors such as Nine Inch Nails, that Bauhaus now sound concentrated and original by comparison. They broke up for the first time in 1983, and this is their second reunion; but depite their fiftysomething status (Peter Murphy sports a bald patch these days) reports suggest they can crank out Bela Lugosi’s Dead as well as they did a quarter of a century ago.
