Moped gang ‘stole £1m of mobile phones’

Moped-riding thieves armed with hammers, knives and a gun stole mobile phones and tablets worth £1 million in 17 raids on shops across London in just over six months, a court has been told.

Five men allegedly used a battering ram to smash their way in to Three mobile phone shops, break into stock rooms and steal hundreds of handsets, which ended up as far away as Pakistan.

Security guards put in stores overnight were attacked with chairs and hammers by some gang members while the others grabbed phones and tablets.

The gang repeatedly went back to the same shops after they were restocked by the phone company, including one in Walthamstow that was hit four times.

The jury was also shown footage from a police helicopter of a ten-mile chase of four of the gang on two mopeds in October last year.

Bobby Kennedy, 22, of no fixed abode, and Chris Costi, 19, of Hackney, east London, are charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and conspiracy to rob between May and November last year. Both deny the charges.

Dylan Castano-Lopez, 19, Alfie Kennedy, 20, the brother of Bobby, and Adam Atallah, 21, had previously pleaded guilty to their part in the conspiracy, Blackfriars crown court was told.

The trial continues.
