Misused mumpower

It is an illusion to believe you should and could protect children from life’s unpleasant realities

Sir, I was little less than astonished to read Harriet Lane’s conclusion that getting the Odeon Cinema to withdraw screening of an advert about Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, was a victory “for the muscle of Mumsnet” (comment, July 5). I think it is an appaling abuse of “mumpower”.

I once lost my four-year-old daughter in Regent’s Park after I looked away for a few seconds and had to endure the agony of a half-hour wait until she was found. This persuades me to think that all that mumpower should have been directed towards doing something constructive to help the McCanns in their search for their daughter. It is an illusion to believe you should and could protect children from life’s unpleasant realities.

You can only do your best to reassure them and protect them. If you want to protect children from everything bad, then you would not be able to let them out of the house, go to school or mix with any other children.
