Miles Davis

Cool and Collected

(Columbia Legacy)

Paid-up Miles-philes will be marking what would have been his 80th year by obtaining the four-CD Prestige Sessions set, which documents a rush of creativity in the 1950s.

Cool and Collected is designed more for newcomers to see what the fuss is about. From Round Midnight (1956) to Human Nature (1984), here is that fragile, lyrical trumpet in some famous settings. There is also one early rarity, the lovely Générique from his improvised film soundtrack to l’Ascenseur pour l’Échafaud. But the unique selling point is the closing remix of It’s About Time that features new, rocky guitar from Carlos Santana. The famous riff builds towards a studio-spliced instrumental duel that reminds us that the Prince of Darkness could break sweat when he fancied.
