Mid air crash kills two RAF crew

Two people were killed in a mid-air crash today when their RAF training aircraft collided with a glider over Oxfordshire.

Thames Valley Police said that the accident, which involved a Tutor single-engine training aircraft, happened at Sutton Courtenay, near Abingdon.

A spokesman said officers were called to the scene at around 2.30pm, and police were informing the next of kin before they disclosed the identities of the RAF personnel involved in the crash.

“The pilot of the glider parachuted to safety and is safe and well,” the spokesman added.

James O’Neill, an eyewitness, told the BBC he saw the wreckage of the RAF Tutor and the glider in a field near his home.

Mr O’Neill said: “I heard a loud crash. Someone parachuted down, who I believe was the pilot from the glider.

“The Thames Valley Police helicopter was on the scene within three minutes, and the fire brigade a minute later.”
