PRODUCTION at MG Rover sank to a record low last year with only 106,088 cars being made by the Longbridge factory.
Late last year the company said that it expected the figure to be about 120,000 and vowed that it would attempt to recover sales and production this year. It has launched a new marketing campaign for Rover cars and is making leather and wood standard fittings in an attempt to boost the range’s appeal.
The recovery plan for the independent car company, which was set out five years ago on its rescue from closure, forecast an output of 200,000 cars a year.
Last year’s figures put MG Rover nearly at the bottom of the league of Britain’s nine major car producers.
Only Jaguar, which last year announced the closure of one of its factories, was lower at 105,532.

Public support for MG Rover, which had been high five years ago, has waned following continued controversy over directors’ remuneration at the loss-making business.
The Rover range has often seen monthly falls in sales of more than 30 per cent over the past 18 months.
