McEwen wins stage one of the Tour de France

Australian Robbie McEwen dominated a bunch sprint to win the first stage of the Tour de France held over 203km from London to here on Sunday.

Swiss racer Fabian Cancellara of CSC retained the race leader’s yellow jersey.

McEwen, who rides for Belgian outfit Predictor-Lotto, hit the accelerator in the final 150 metres of the race to stun Belgium’s Tom Boonen and Thor Hushovd of Norway and win by over a bike length.

Hushovd eventually finished second, with Boonen finishing in third.

McEwen now has 12 stage victories from the Tour de France, and he has now equalled German sprinter Erik Zabel, who until Sunday held the ‘record’ of having the most stage wins (12) on the Tour for a rider still competing.
