For some, it was an awkward moment that symbolised Britain’s isolation after the decision to leave the EU. For others, Theresa May’s brief solitary moment after arriving for the European Council summit in Brussels represented a country standing against the cosy European elite club that Britons narrowly rejected in June.

Footage showed the prime minister standing at her desk awkwardly, fidgeting as other EU leaders said hello. It may come to be seen as a moment that showed EU leaders as petty and inhospitable. Another clip later showed her laughing and chatting, however.
