Maunders in the swing

WORCESTER (Leicestershire won toss; first day of four): Worcestershire have scored 331 runs against Leicestershire

WORCESTERSHIRE made speedy progress to recapture second place in the table but two collapses — the last induced by a career-best four for 15 from John Maunders’s medium-pace swing — undermined a free-scoring effort.

Lou Vincent scorched to 78 off 68 balls, driving two sixes and twice as many fours over the bowlers’ heads with abandon. Vikram Solanki took up the cudgels when the New Zealand opener edged to slip, hitting three consecutive cover drives off Nick Walker and an up-periscope four over the wicketkeeper, after which words were exchanged in the last over before lunch.

At 162 for two off 34 overs, Worcestershire were in control but they had slipped to 213 for five when Graeme Hick was caught behind forcing off the back foot.

Stephen Davies constructed a controlled fifty as Gareth Batty and Roger Sillence hit round him, but when Davies edged Maunders behind, Worcestershire lost their last four wickets for nine runs in eight overs.
