Marriott London West India Quay, E14

A 32-storey lemon slice with stunning views of London, says Tom Chesshyre

First impressions

Looks like a giant, metallic, 32-storey slice of lemon. This new hotel in Canary Wharf goes to the eighth floor, above which are apartments.

Why it’s special

Some rooms have terrific cityscape views including the Sir Norman Foster-designed “Gherkin” skyscraper. At night, corporate logos ablaze, it’s a close as Britain can be to Hong Kong or Manhattan.

Hitting the sack

Comfortable beds, corporate-style furnishings, giant TV, mini-bar. But my room is on the DLR side, and despite triple-glazing, rumbling and squeaking trains wake me in the morning.

Sampling the fare

The Curve restaurant has a simple, seafood-oriented menu. Oysters, lobster, snapper, sea bass, crab. Two courses about £20, without drinks.

Added attractions

Lots of bars and waterside restaurants. Half an hour by DLR and Tube to the West End. Small gym and saunas (no pool).

Access all areas

Wheelchair access throughout.

Bottom line

Doubles from £205.

What we think

Expensive, but an unusual, almost otherworldly, setting. City-view suites with triangular glass-wall lounges are the best; £511 (away from the trains).
