Mari Kiviniemi, 41, has been appointed Finland’s second woman Prime Minister after the resignation last week of Matti Vanhanen.
She was given the green light after a vote in parliament and President Tarja Halonen dissolved scandal-hit Mr Vanhanen’s second government, which has been in power since 2007.
Ms Kiviniemi has been Finland’s public administration and local government minister since 2007 and an MP since 1995.
Women now hold the top two posts in Finland for the second time in the country’s history.
