What: Leicester and the Russian War, 1854-56

Description: An exhibition to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Paris, which brought an end to the Crimean War. The story of the war - the battles of the Alma, Balaclava (including the Charge of the Light Brigade) and Inkerman as well as the siege of Sebastopol and naval operations in the Baltic - is told in the words of local men who served and women who were left behind - to the mercy of the poor law.

Description: Margaret Cavendish, a woman of science before her time, one of the greatest collectors of the 18th century who assembled the world-famous Portland Museum; patron of Captain Cook and with a circle of friends and associates who included some of the most radical intellectual and creative thinkers of the time. After her death her entire museum was auctioned and she was forgotten. This is the first exhibition to celebrate and explore her life. Displays include objects from the Portland Museum bought back by the family, letters and accounts and a recreations of the Duchess’ displays of natural history specimens.

What: Samuel Beckett - The Irish European at the Museum of Reading

Description: A centenary exhibition telling the story of Samuel Beckett’s life and achievements from his birth in Dublin on 13 April 1906, through his wartime experiences in France, to his worldwide fame following the success of ‘Waiting for Godot’. The exhibition features works by photographer John Haynes and artist Bruce Nauman. This exhibition has been created in association with the University of Reading. The University holds the most important archive of Beckett material in the world, much of it donated by Beckett himself.

Description: Handel and the Castrati will reveal the stories behind these eighteenth century super-opera-stars. With powerful high voices, castrati singers brought their celebrity status to wherever they travelled and were surrounded by money, extensive entourages and adoring fans. Discover how young boys became castrati and developed their voices and how Handel used these unusual instruments to best advantage. The exhibition will feature pictures, prints, scores and objects relating to the castrati. There will also be a chance to hear some of the most ravishing and emotive melodies Handel ever wrote, as the exhibition will be complemented by a series of concerts dedicated.
