Rescuers who launched a search operation after an empty kayak was seen drifting offshore have found a man’s body.

A fishing vessel raised the alarm after spotting the kayak floating in the Firth of Forth with no one on board yesterday. The kayak was found about three miles off Port Seton at 5.45pm.

Someone on the shore subsequently spotted a person in the water off Musselburgh and called emergency services. The Aberdeen coastguard said that search-and-rescue helicopter 131 had recovered the person from the water.

Police Scotland said that they were called to Goose Green Place near the shore in Musselburgh, East Lothian, early yesterday evening after a man’s body was found.

A police spokesman said: “Inquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.”
