Making a difference

A wind turbine to help to power a glass factory, new heads for hotel room showers, switching a car fleet to hybrid vehicles: these are just some of the energy and carbon savings initiatives to emerge from a joint campaign between the Carbon Trust and The Times. Three large companies, one each from the commercial, leisure and manufacturing sectors, were chosen to take part in a fast-track carbon management programme to improve energy efficiency and cut CO2 emissions.

Consultants were appointed to study all aspects of operations at our carbon champions — Allied Glass, Travelodge and Friends Provident — to see what they could do to help to combat climate change. For the past two months, The Times has monitored their findings and how the companies have reacted to them. We believe the campaign will encourage more companies to embark on the Carbon Trust’s programme. In this third and final Focus Report, we examine the ideas the carbon champions will be pursuing, how they plan to implement them and reveal the millions of pounds they can save on energy costs and thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions they can cut.
