This is the second volume of Mahler songs from Genz, Vignoles and Hyperion, this time focusing on the collection of folk poetry made by the founders of German Romanticism, Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, which preoccupied Mahler as both a songwriter and a symphonist during the early phase of his career. Genz and Vignoles begin with the militaristic call to arms of Revelge and close with the consoling strains of Urlicht, which found a place in the Second Symphony. With his slightly colourless lyric baritone, Genz is better in light-hearted songs such as Rheinlegendchen and Lob Des Hohen Verstandes than in the tragic soldier songs. His Urlicht is beautifully sung, however, and Vignoles's playing is remarkably expressive throughout.
