Lorraine Candy: editor’s letter

The Sunday Times

Every few weeks, I hand over my mobile phone to a friend, colleague or, occasionally, a teenage cohort of my eldest daughter, and ask them to pick five new songs for me to download. I started doing it when I took up listening to more music while jogging, because I quickly realised, as I pounded the paths of Regent’s Park, there are only so many times you can listen to Prince, Kid Creole, Madonna and Fatboy Slim’s greatest hits. If I hadn’t delegated the choice of new music to new people, I would be for ever trapped in a 1980s disco or a 1990s rave, listening to the music that defined my youth.

Never are these downloads more useful than in the summer, when having an epic playlist for our holiday drives to Cornwall, or long evenings in the garden, is joyous. I highly recommend roping someone in to do it for you, but in the meantime, revel in our roundup of songs to get you through the happy sunny days and nights ahead. We’ve asked the experts to compile one of the best music playlists ever, just for you. Go to Style’s Spotify playlist to get the line-up now: spoti.fi/StyleSummer.

And check out Style’s new book club. Every Thursday, our acting features editor, Louisa McGillicuddy, will be recommending five books to add to your shelf on our Instagram, @TheSTStyle . Fiction, non-fiction, anything under 300 pages — join the conversation and let us know what you want to hear about with #stylereads.

PS As you read this, I will be in Switzerland preparing for my six-person relay swim (ever so slowly) across Lake Geneva tomorrow. Follow my Facebook Fan page for live updates. @sundaytimeslorraine
