England salvaged a crumb of comfort from their miserable World Cup campaign today when they defeated lowly Afghanistan by nine wickets in Sydney.
In a rain-affected game, England were set a revised target of 101 from 25 overs and eased home albeit in somewhat stilted fashion, with Ian Bell making 52 from 56 balls and Alex Hales the only man out for 37 from 33.
Rain curtailed the end of the innings for Afghanistan, who were on 111 for seven when the heavens opened, with Shafiqullah top scoring for the pool A minnows with 30.
