Litter tax plan to boost recycling

A tax could be imposed on people who produce more rubbish than their neighbours.

Ben Bradshaw, a junior environment minister, said yesterday that the Government was considering “variable charging”, which would allow local authorities to tax households according to the amount of waste they have produced after separation for recycling.

“Of course financial incentives are important,” Mr Bradshaw told The Politics Show on BBC One. “The Government has certainly not ruled out variable charging.”

Opponents say that large families, who create more waste, could be unfairly penalised by the charges.
