VENUS RISING

Titian’s Venus Rising from the Sea, acquired by the National Gallery of Scotland in 2003 for £11.4m, forms the centrepiece of this exhibition. It is joined by related works including René Magritte’s La Representation, The Birth of Venus by the Glasgow-trained painter Edward Baird and a photographic piece by Calum Colvin, which offers a contemporary take on Titian’s masterpiece.

Monarch of the Glen revisits the work of great 19th-century British animal painter Sir Edwin Henry Landseer. An entire section is devoted to the artist’s commanding deer paintings including the world-famous Monarch of the Glen.

Still the hippest alternative to the Turner, the Beck’s Futures 2005 returns to the CCA. This year’s winner was Christina Mackie who picked up a cheque for £26,000 for her wooden frame installation which projected video and slide shows of flower petals.

AN ASIDE

An Aside has been put together by the British artist Tacita Dean in an attempt to bring together a group of seemingly random artists and their work to allow the development of unexpected themes and links. The exhibition includes painting and sculpture by Eileen Agar, Lothar Baumgarten and Joseph Beuys.

Seven artists from Britain and further afield, including the American artist Mark Dion and Jordan Baseman, present work that engages with various locations in Dundee. Dion is working with Camperdown wildlife centre on a new visitor space at the re-developed bear enclosure while Baseman has produced a film portrait depicting the life of Dundee’s satellite receiving station.

BARBARA KRUGER

In her first exhibition on Scottish soil, Kruger presents a new installation that makes full use of the space by reaching out across the walls, floor, columns and skylight of the gallery. Born in New Jersey, Kruger is best known for her layered photographs which explore issues of power and control in sexuality and politics. Part of Glasgow International, Kruger will also exhibit work on a billboard at Glasgow’s Central station.
